Charrine and Todd Lace are the husband-and-wife team behind Wet'suwet'en Native Arts, an Indigenous-owned business based in Witset, BC. Charrine is a Wet’suwet’en artist and shares her cultural knowledge, teachings and traditional arts through their work. Todd works alongside her in the preparation of cedar materials and the hands-on teaching of cedar weaving. Together, they welcome participants into a respectful, hands-on learning experience.

Wet’suwet’en Cedar Basket Weaving with Charrine & Todd Lace of Wet'suwet'en Native Arts
This workshop welcomes adults from all cultural backgrounds who are interested in learning about Indigenous arts and Wet’suwet’en cedar weaving. No previous weaving experience is needed — beginners are welcome!

Join Charrine and Todd for an afternoon of learning, sharing and hands-on cedar weaving.
The session will begin with a welcome and a gentle brushing with a feather fan. The brushing is offered as a way to welcome participants into the session.
This will be followed by an introduction to Wet’suwet’en cedar basket weaving, including how cedar is prepared and some of the traditional uses of cedar baskets.
After the introduction and teachings, there will be time for questions and discussion before we begin the hands-on weaving portion of the session. This allows everyone to listen and learn without interruption while the teachings are being shared.
You’ll then learn basic weaving techniques and work with prepared cedar strips to create your own basket. Charrine will share Wet’suwet’en knowledge, teachings and stories throughout the session, while she and Todd guide participants through the hands-on weaving process.
There will be a 45-minute break during the session to rest your hands, enjoy some refreshments and visit with one another.
By the end of the afternoon, you’ll have a better understanding of Wet’suwet’en cedar weaving and a handwoven cedar basket to take home.
All cedar materials for the workshop have been harvested and prepared by Charrine and Todd Lace.

No experience necessary — just curiosity and a willingness to make a mess.

Day 1 – Colour Theory Foundations: Understand the colour wheel, complementary and analogous colours, warm vs. cool tones, and how to mix the exact shade you're wanting.

Day 2 – Acrylic Painting Basics: Get hands-on with brushes, blending techniques, layering, and building texture — all while learning how acrylics behave differently from other mediums.

Day 3 – Bringing It Together: Apply everything you've learned to complete your own original piece, with one-on-one guidance from Shannon every step of the way.
You will be given a 6X6 canvas, you can take it home or donate a completed piece of art to the Smithers Art Gallery biannual fundraiser, "6X6 Silent Auction"!

Discover the power of white to add luminosity and light in watercolor. White space in watercolor gives lightness, focus, contrast and rest to paintings. In this focused workshop, we will explore many uses of white - adding texture, highlights, atmospheric effects, and pastel tones.
What You'll Learn:

Techniques for preserving and using the white of the paper as your lightest value: negative painting, masking, lifting, wax resist, dry brushing and scraping.

How to use materials for adding white accents and highlights: white watercolor paints, gouache, watercolor ink, gel pen, and acrylic markers.
